Jobo Pooks Music
I started my online music adventures with a company called Peoplesound.com. They took artist's music tracks and marketed them, offering downloads to the public from an artist web page and taking a cut of the profit made. Didn't work too well and many musicians were very unhappy regarding payments and download and streaming quality. Peoplesound then developed a platform called Vitaminic, which really got everyone pissed off. I'd had enough and dropped them like a ton of bricks. I went off on a learning curve; deciding to do it all myself and set about website design. I learned how to convert my tracks into smaller files similar to MP3 called Real files (.rm) and using free web hosting, put my stuff online with no middle man.
I wrote an article on how I went about it and got it to as many of my former Peoplesound buddies as possible, asking them to spread the word and many were pretty chuffed.
It wasn't a good time for selling downloaded material unfortunately as Napster and other sites emerged and the thieving... Erm....sharing of MP3s went through the roof. Even the big bands soon realised their money was in gigging.
Between 1999 and 2004 I wrote and produced 8 albums, which are currently available for free download, with the option of donating to my charity of choice, Zoe's Place children's hospice. I've never really liked the music business.... well, perhaps hate the music business would be more apt, but given some folk like my stuff, I share it online.
Hunter S Thompson summed things up well.
"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."
Actually, Thompson never really made this quote. It was about the TV industry and was embellished online. Never the less, it's pretty accurate as far as I'm concerned.
I left my music on the shelf for a long time after the last album Llabluuzlabel and headed off on a spiritual quest after stumbling upon a Deepak Chopra forum. Great days on 56k dial up, even though it was painfully slow. Once I'd come full circle re my quest I just couldn't get back into music with any real gusto, but I'm back on track again and playing around with ideas regarding gym workout material along with meditative relaxation stuff. It could go anywhere. It might go nowhere. Who knows? Who cares? I'm just pissing about having fun. Stay tuned, or not.
